How MSgames Transformed Operations Management Learning for MBA Students at IIM Sambalpur
By trading static problems for real decisions, MSgames brought operations management concepts to life for students while making evaluation far simpler for faculty
The integration of MSgames into the Operations Management 2 course for MBA students at IIM Sambalpur has substantially enriched the teaching-learning process on 31st January, 2026 of 312 students. Operations Management concepts such as capacity planning, waiting line models, process design, and performance measurement are inherently analytical and quantitative. By embedding these topics within a simulation-based environment, students move beyond static numerical problem-solving and engage in dynamic, real-time decision-making. This experiential approach strengthens conceptual understanding and aligns well with the applied orientation of MBA pedagogy.
A key advantage of MSgames is the significant reduction in effort required for individual assessment. Managing nearly 80 students per section across four sections would otherwise demand considerable time in designing, administering, and evaluating assignments. The simulation platform automates scoring, records team decisions, and generates structured performance reports. This not only improves efficiency but also enhances transparency and objectivity in evaluation. The instructor can monitor outcomes in real time, compare strategic choices across teams, and provide data-driven feedback with greater ease.
In terms of classroom engagement, the simulations create an interactive and competitive learning environment. Students actively collaborate in teams, debate alternatives, and immediately observe the operational impact of their decisions. This process enhances critical thinking, analytical application, and time-bound decision-making skills. The majority of students found the experience highly engaging and appreciated the opportunity to apply theoretical models in a realistic setting. The gamified structure increased participation and fostered deeper involvement compared to conventional lecture-based sessions.
The experience of using MSgames in OM2 has been highly positive. The platform significantly enhances engagement, improves assessment efficiency, and promotes experiential learning.
