The Sustainable Select

You are the CEO of BMOX Analytics, and the board needs a decision. Five SDG-aligned projects are on the table — each with different budgets, timelines, and impact profiles. Before any ranking method can run, you need to choose your expert team, define what matters most, and commit to a judgment. In The Sustainable Select, the quality of your final recommendation will depend less on the analytical tools you apply and more on the decisions you made before you ever opened a spreadsheet.

Introduction

The Sustainable Select places participants in the role of CEO of BMOX Analytics, an Indian SME advancing Sustainable Development Goals through data-driven projects. Participants face five competing SDG-aligned project proposals and must select one to prioritise while ranking the others for board review. The simulation follows a structured seven-step process — expert team selection, project familiarisation, attribute selection, expert evaluation, weight determination, MADM ranking application, and final consistency assessment — mirroring the rigour and complexity of real-world strategic project evaluation under resource constraints.

Performance depends on expert selection quality, attribute framing relevance, methodological rigour, and the alignment between managerial judgment and analytical outcomes. A key design insight runs throughout: decision quality is determined more by how well the problem is structured in the early steps than by computational sophistication in the later ones.

Learning Objectives
  • Apply MADM to rank SDG projects
  • Select expert panels using ideal-fit logic
  • Define and weight criteria objectively
  • Compare WSM, WPM, and MOORA outcomes
  • Align judgment with analytical rankings
Key Features
  • Seven-step structured decision journey — expert selection, project familiarisation, attribute selection, expert evaluation, weight determination, MADM ranking, and consistency assessment — progressing sequentially with cumulative financial consequences at each step
  • Three MADM ranking methods — Weighted Sum Model (WSM), Weighted Product Model (WPM), and MOORA — run alongside both objective weighting methods (entropy, CRITIC) and custom weights for methodological triangulation
  • Expert selection from a pool of 20 candidates evaluated across seven criteria, with proximity-to-ideal scoring and financial bonuses and penalties linked to selection accuracy
  • Spearman Rank Correlation (ρ) used to measure alignment between intuitive managerial judgment and analytical MADM outcomes, with performance bands tied to financial rewards
  • Leaderboard rankings across four dimensions: expert selection quality, critical attribute inclusion, ranking consistency, and cumulative net profit
Educational Outcomes
  1. Ability to apply MADM principles to SDG-oriented project evaluation under realistic SME resource constraints
  2. Skill to assemble expert teams balancing knowledge, cost, and objectivity using proximity-to-ideal logic
  3. Capacity to select and weight decision attributes aligned with organisational mission and differentiation priorities
  4. Proficiency in implementing and comparing objective weighting methods — entropy and CRITIC — alongside custom weights
  5. Recognition that decision quality emerges from problem structuring — expert selection and attribute framing — rather than analytical sophistication alone
